Kohola means "whale" in Hawaiian and whales symbolize creativity, well-being, nurturing, emotional rebirth, as well as devotion to community. Native Hawaiians believe the kohola are aumakua (family guardians) and are treated with much respect. Humpbacks are known to give births to their calves in the Hawaiian waters, making them kamaaina (native born). Although humpback whales and sperm whales are most commonly seen in Hawaii during our whale season (December through early May), blue whales occationally have also made an appearance here before. Blue whales are the largest and the loudest existing animals alive. I can't wait to hear the all of them sing!
